His father, Sanada Masayuki, and his elder brother Sanada Nobuyuki are also famous. The reason that Sanada clan is famous is that they won against Tokugawa clan three times. At last Tokugawa clan couldn't win against Sanada clan at wars.
Tokugawa clan is a Shogun's clan in Edo period(1603-1867).
First war:
Tokugawa's army tried to invade Sanada's territory. Tokugawa dispatched 18 to 20 thousands soldiers to Ueda castle which is a base of Sanada clan. Sanada clan has only 3 thousands soldiers.
Sanada Masayuki led 50 soldiers and stood face to face Tokugawa armies. Tokugawa's commander thought they felt taken for granted and Tokugawa made an attack. Then another Sanada's 300 soldiers made an attack from the flank. Tokugawa was astonished and tried to pull out of the site. Tokugawa couldn't attack again because they afraid of Sanada's strategy.
Second war:
30 thousands soldiers led by Tokugawa Hidetada(2nd Shogun) tired to invade Sanada's territory again. They stepped into a snare set by Sanada again. Tokugawa was astonished and tried to pull out of the site. When Tokugawa were getting across a river, Sanada broke a dam which Sanada constructed for this war. And lasher wiped out many Tokugawa soldiers.
Third war:
Yukimura Sanada entered Osaka castle to fight against Tokugawa Ieyasu (1st shogun)again, and to repay an obligation to Toyotomi clan, former ruler of Japan. He built a base at the south part of Osaka castle and repulsed many armies of powerful Daimyo led by Tokugawa Ieyasu. Tokugawa had to bult a big mountain of their own dead body.
After pacification, the war restarted. Sanada Yukimura planed to kill Tokugawa Ieyasu in partnership with other Samurai commanders. But it was fog and it was too dense in the morning and they couldn't do concerted action.
Sanada Yukimura decided to attack alone. He led 3,500 soldiers and charged at Tokugawa's 100 thousands army.
Sanada's red samurais(They were dressed in red armors) bursted through Tokugawa's formation many times. Sanada's army pressed hard Tokugawa Ieyasu. Then Ieyasu ran a way because of fear. However, Sanada's armies pressed hard Tokugawa Ieyasu again. Then Ieyasu ran a way again, then Sanada's army pressed hard Tokugawa Ieyasu again. Tokugawa Ieyasu decided to do seppuku(disembowel hisself).
According to a TV drama, at last, Yukimura Sanada got in Tokugawa Ieyasu's way. Tokugawa Ieyasu trembled like an aspen leaf and went deadly pale. Sanada Yukimura made his horse dash. However, Tokugawa's ten soldiers aimed a gun at Sanada Yukimura. He stopped augustly and laugh at Tokugawa Ieyasu and leave for somewhere. Tokugawa Ieyasu had been trembling during the attack.
At midnight, a samurai found Sanada Yukimura at a shrine, Yasui Tenjin. Yukimura said "take my head with your sword, I'm tired." to the samurai named Nishio Nizaemon.
Nishio Nizaemon said "I got his head through fighting" to Tokugawa Ieyasu. But Ieyasu brushed down with him saying "Sanada is the terrific samurai, I never believe you could got the neck through a figit." And Nishio Nizaemon couldn't get any reward.
Tokugawa's soldiers bestowed the highest eulogy on Sanada Yukimura.
They said.
"Sanada is the Japan's best samurai.".
I think he is the best samurai in Japanese history.
Yukimura Sanada's elder brother took the part of Tokugawa at 2nd war and 3rd war to hand down their family race. And Nobuyuki Sanada came to rule Ueda region and Numata region. Decades later, Numata's lord has done maladministration and the Sanada clan of Numata forfeit by Shogun. The Sanada moved to Osaka and became my family's relation in Edo era.
As for Ueda's Sanada, it continued by beginning of Meiji era.
In fact, amid the pacification time Sanada Yukimura denied a offer from Tokugawa Ieyasu passing on a big province to Yukimura and leave from Osaka castle. He denied saying that "What I want is not a province but the head of Tokugawa Ieyasu."
His story and his Ninja's story is very popular with Japanese.
The photo is Osaka castle rebuilt several decades ago.
