空海

There are many masters of Shodo(art of calligraphy) in Japan. Especially Sanpitsu is very famous. Sanpitsu means Three greatest Shodo master. 空海:Kukai(774-835), Tachibana Hayanari(???-842) and Emperor Saga(786-842).

Kukai is most famous among them. There are two saying involving with Kukai. One is "弘法も筆のあやまり". It means Homer sometimes nods. The other is "弘法筆を選ばず". It means "A poor workman blames his tools.", according to a dictionary. Hmm,,I don't think so. First one means "Even Kukai makes a mistake in writing. " Second one means "Kukai is good at calligraphy as the brush need not be chosen. ".

弘法も筆のあやまり(Kobo mo fude no ayamari, こうぼうもふでのあやまり)

弘法筆を選ばず(Kobo fude wo erabazu, こうぼうふでをえらばず)

(Kobo is a title of Kukai.)

When someone who has great skill makes a mistake, we say it is the first one. In fact, I've seen in a museum letters on which Kukai had made mistakes. Although many people regard Kukai as one of the greatest chirographer, frankly, I don't think so. I don't understand why he is one of greatest. I know some great works written by Kusai. But works I saw are not great, I think. However, many people gratefully look at them which I don't think great.

Kukai is a monk of Tantric Buddhism. He established Shingon-shu-sect. And once he was regarded as a most greatest monk in Japan. There are many episode about him in Japan. For example, when he gored a ground, hot spring gushed. He had prayed for rain, and it rained. He had thrown a spear from China, the bow stick out of Koyasan mountain in Japan. Anyway, he is a great monk.

He is said that he is still practicing Zazen in a hall of Koyasan mountain. And it is a dogma of Shingon-sect. However, it is not true story. His dead body was buried. And it seems the dead body was moved to the hall. And no one is allowed to see the hall, thus, even though we can't believe the story, we can't define about it. Therefore the dogma is still alive.

Kukai defined Shingon-sect is most advanced and perfect buddhism. I think those episode I wrote make people believe in what Kukai said. And he cleverly curried favor with Emperor Saga, he could advanced his career.

Kukai wrote many books, for example, 十住心論(Jyujyushinton),秘蔵寳鑰(Hizohoyaku),三教指帰(Sangoshiiki), 般若心経秘鍵(Hannyashingyo-hiken), and so on.

His sect once had flourished and has been overtaken by Tendai Tantric Buddhism. His students say Shingon is best buddhism even now and I think it was most hot buddhism in Kukai's era.

Even though I've studied Shodo for 6 years, I've forgotten how to write letters in Shodo's style. I tried to write it with Fude-pen. But I couldn't write well. Fude-pen is a kind of felt pen like a brush.

I took the photo at my home. I wrote those Kanji and it is a very ill-balanced work. =D And it is not " "Even Kukai makes a mistake in writing. ". Just I am not good with it. HAHA.

Well, I am going to indulge in a nap.
